I’ve been painting and printmaking as a professional artist since 2001 and I’m thrilled that you’re interested in my more intimate and personal fine art.
Primarily, with all my work, I’m trying to understand myself more; my thoughts, motives, and subconscious. I strive to uncover layers of myself through deep personal introspection, journaling, writing, poetry, painting, and collaging.
I find that, by unveiling my emotions and experiences (no matter how painful) through art-making, I’m able to remix my understandings to create a physical record of my past that allows release. Art-making is therapy to me and I hope to communicate my own insights in a way that encourages others to delve into their own self-mysteries.
Pieces like Torn, a 10″ x 10″ hand-cut paper collage, were born out of an extremely abusive marriage and then messy (to put it mildly) separation from my ex-husband.
I create these painfully personal artworks to accompany short stories, poems, and other writings. The artworks stand alone on their own and often inspire me to tell more stories later on.
Usually my art starts with a drawing, a collage, a poem, or a journal entry. It might be inspired by something I read, or physically experienced. I create primarily the mediums of paper collage, digital collage, and acrylic mediums (textures, stiffeners, etc.), with some oil-based paint pens. I use a variety of layering techniques including mixed media, washes, stencils, stamps, traced patterns, arabesque, organic floral elements, and geometric designs. Mathematical geometries, especially, reflect the certain awe I feel when contemplating the Divine.
Journey to Trusting from the Foreign Land of Turbidity (based on my poem The Trusting Place)
At times making art can seem more like alchemy than anything else. The way I create exemplifies that groping, combining, adding, and subtraction that occurs when an artist is in the flow of creating something meaningful and unique.
